By default, both Firefox and Chrome open PDF files using a built-in reader. Firefox PDF Settings
Unlike other browsers, Firefox only uses internal settings to select a PDF viewer. Open the 'Firefox' menu, click 'Options' and open 'Applications.' Scroll down to 'Portable Document Format (PDF).' Open the drop-down menu in the Action column and select 'Use Adobe Acrobat.' The option may include your Acrobat version number or '(default),' but should not say '(in Firefox),' which indicates a browser plugin rather than the full program. If you don't see the correct option, click 'Use Other' and select Acrobat Pro from the list.
Windows PDF Settings
Changing the default viewer for PDF files in Windows affects files opened locally as well as PDF files opened in Chrome and Internet Explorer. To switch the default program from Adobe Reader, or Reader on Windows 8, to Adobe Acrobat Pro, right-click any PDF file on your computer, click 'Open With' and pick 'Choose Default Program.' Pick the full version of Acrobat from the list and press 'OK.' If you don't see it on the list, click 'Browse' and locate Acrobat Pro on your PC. Chrome PDF Settings
After setting your default local PDF viewer, you need to turn off Chrome's internal viewer. Type 'chrome:plugins' (without quotes) in Chrome's address bar and press 'Enter.' Click 'Disable' underneath 'Chrome PDF Viewer.' If you have the Adobe Reader plugin installed, click the 'Disable' link under it as well. The first time you open a PDF after changing these settings, Chrome will download it without opening it. Click the arrow by the file on the Download bar and choose 'Always Open Files of This Type' to instruct the browser to run Acrobat Pro automatically in the future.
Internet Explorer PDF Settings
Internet Explorer does not include a built-in PDF viewer, but may still use the Adobe Reader plugin, instead of opening files in Acrobat Pro. Open the Tools menu in Internet Explorer and click 'Manage Add-Ons.' On the Toolbars and Extensions tab, find 'Adobe PDF Viewer.' Select it and click 'Disable.' After turning off the plugin, opening a PDF will prompt you to either open or save the file. Choosing 'Open' will run your system's default PDF reader, now set to Acrobat Pro.
